The Monday Driveway Shuffle and What It Says About Your Home

Amanda Pullen | 10/26/2026

You walk out the door Monday morning already behind. Coffee is in one hand and keys are in the other. And there it is again, the driveway shuffle. Backing up, pulling forward, and texting the group chat to ask whose car needs to move.

Everyone is on a different schedule now. Early practice, a late shift, a college class, work across town.

Your house didn't feel small when you bought it. Seasons change, though. If you have started scrolling homes with a three-car garage in North Fort Worth, this shuffle might be the reason.

We lived this too

Raising three teenagers, we had five, sometimes six, cars at our house at one point. Just when we thought we had the shuffle figured out, the kids started driving. Then their friends started coming over. Suddenly the street was full too.

What used to feel manageable started to feel heavy and cluttered. It became one more thing to coordinate in a day that already felt full. On a narrow street with limited parking and a two-car garage carrying the weight of a growing household, that daily shuffle stops being funny real quick.

Why parking becomes a real problem when teens start driving

Parking seems like a small thing on a home tour. Almost nobody walks into a house and asks where car number four will sleep. Then kids get licenses and part-time jobs, and the math changes fast.

A tight driveway affects more than cars. It shapes your mornings, your stress level, and even whether your kids feel welcome having friends over. When there is nowhere to park, friends stop coming by as often. That quiet change is easy to miss.

What to look for in homes with a three-car garage in North Fort Worth

A bigger garage helps, and it is still only one piece. When we tour homes in Keller, Roanoke, Trophy Club or Northlake, here is what I pay attention to:

  • Driveway length and width. Count how many cars fit without blocking the sidewalk or boxing someone in.
  • Street width and shape. A cul-de-sac or narrow street can fill up quickly when friends visit.
  • HOA parking rules. Some HOAs limit street parking or overnight parking. Ask for the rules in writing before you make an offer.
  • How the garage will really be used. Picture where the bikes, tools, extra fridge and sports gear will go. A three-car garage packed with storage won't fix the shuffle.
  • Garage layout. Side-entry or split garages can change how a driveway works day to day.

Plan for the season ahead

In my Lifestyle Approach Method, we start with the big picture. We look at what works for you right now and what will still support you when life gets fuller and louder.

A few questions shape that plan:

  • How many drivers will live here in three years?
  • Who leaves first in the morning, and who gets home last?
  • Where do guests park on a Friday night?
  • Does anyone work odd hours or need to leave in a hurry?

These answers can matter as much as the number of bedrooms. A home that fits your season makes the whole day easier, starting with the first ten minutes.

If you are in a starter home in Saginaw, Haslet or the Alliance corridor, your current equity may be part of this plan. A clear look at your numbers is a good first step, and it doesn't commit you to anything.

Common questions

Is a three-car garage worth it in North Fort Worth? It depends on how many drivers and how much gear live at your house. With teen drivers at home, extra parking can change daily life more than an extra bedroom would.

What should I ask about parking before buying a home? Ask about HOA street parking rules, how many cars the driveway holds, and how busy the street gets in the evening. Drive by at night and on a weekend to see it for yourself.

When should we plan for teen drivers? Earlier than you think. When your kids are a few years from driving, build that into your search now so the next house still fits when they get their licenses.
